Journal of Speech Language and Hearing Research, 59(1), 133-142. doi:10.1044/2015_jslhr-l-15-0038 The connection between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and language impairment (LI) in terms of both disorders sharing symptoms has been problematic from a stakeholder standpoint. There are many cases where the symptoms of ADHD are over diagnosed due to the aforementioned overlap (especially by teachers). Hence, it is crucial to comprehend that a child may appear to have ADHD because they exhibit certain problems that are related to LI or other issues. To that end there have been changes in the DSM that make ADHD only diagnosable if there are characteristics of the disorder that take place outside of the context of the school. The reason the above discussion is important is because LI and/or SLI (specific language impairment) are other disorders that can negatively affect children and it goes underreported and therefore undertreated because of the commonalities with ADHD; especially when teachers are reporting on the symptoms of ADHD. Certainly there are s everal independent issues including SLI that lead to problems that mirror ADHD symptoms. The goal going forward is to isolate ADHD from SLI, which is where the studies to be discussed below come in.
